Free Style.

I found this bike over the weekend at Goodwill for $20. They had signs up advertising the store-wide half price sale that was to happen the very next day but I couldn't take the chance that it might get snapped up by someone else. I've never seen a bike with a checker-painted sprocket wheel like this plus white rims. I can't wait to start working on it. Bike makeover!

[Portfolio] Light Touch.

I love the look and feel of long, false lashes but since wearing them on your eyelids the conventional way is time-consuming, uncomfortable, and generally not a practical daily endeavour, I wanted to find another way to use them and this is what I came up with.

Even though the aggravation level for this project was at times sky-high, it was a lot of fun to make and I'm pretty happy with the final result. Seeing as how there are endless ways to modify the original design (lash and chain types, colour combinations, configuration, etc.), I'm anxious to try out some other ideas soon.

One Night of Love.

Mystery Jets are coming to Toronto on September 13th! The show was announced a few days back and because they're playing at Horseshoe (a fairly small venue) I literally felt ill at the thought that it might already be sold out. I actually asked if I could leave work for a bit to go get tickets and when I finally had them firmly within my grasp a giant wave of equal parts relief and glee washed over me. Sometimes, when you love something a lot you think everyone else must, too. Lucky for me I think they are still relatively unknown around here. I am so excited I can hardly stand it.

Metaphysical.

Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) firmly positioned himself as the finest Soviet director of the post-War period. But his influence extended well beyond the Soviet Union. The Cahiers du cinéma consistently ranked his films on their top ten annual lists.

Shot between 1962 and 1986, Tarkovsky’s seven feature films often grapple with metaphysical and spiritual themes, using a distinctive cinematic style. Long takes, slow pacing and metaphorical imagery – they all figure into the archetypical Tarkovsky film.

The Russian director's complete filmography is now available for free from Open Culture.

The Brightest Star.

Helvetica: 1983

A poster for the 50 Exhibition in the Design Museum in London. 50 designers and design companies were assigned a year at random and asked to create a poster that would be reproduced at 50 × 50 cm in an edition of 50. We were given the year 1983.

In 1983, D. Stempel AG redesigned Helvetica for the digital age, creating Neue Helvetica for Linotype. An uppercase letter ‘N’ from each weight is overlaid in a reference to the interpolation technique used to make the different weights. Reversing out of the letters is an image of the Lyra star system. Vega – the brightest star in the system – is 24 light years from Earth. So, when we look at Vega from 2007, we see it in 1983.
